Youth for Change held a press conference on 7th February 2019 briefing the current deforestation in Sinharaja in the guise of tourism development.
The bio diversity of Sinharaja cannot be compromised under any circumstances. However the World Bank funded project namely ESCAMP was approved in the year 2011 to build a 10 feet concrete roadway in from Thudawa entrance of the forest. The said project was not moving forward due to the public protests. The present government has secretly commenced the said project by clearing larger area of the forest causing irreparable damage to the natural fauna and flora of the forest.
Deforestation and genes smuggling are rampantly carrying out in Sinharaja with the blessings of the politicians. Those illegal activities are further encouraged and streamlined by building easy access roads. Therefore general public and the environmentalists should come forward against this project and neo liberal agendas.
