Youth For Chenge and Revolutionary Student Union organized a joined protest in front of Brazilian Emabassy in Sri Lanka on 27th August 2019 against the President Jair Bolsonaro’s silent approach on fire of Amazon.

The Amazon rainforest has been on fire for the past three weeks. President Jair Bolsonaro did not take appropriate steps to control the fire until the environmental movements brought this issue to the attention of the world. The number of fires in Brazil this year is the highest on record since 2013 and is up by 85% from last year alone. So far this year, more than 80,000 fires in the country have been detected by Brazil’s space research center.

Attention to the fires surged worldwide last week when social media users rallied around several trending hash tags. People around the globe also took to the streets and protested, demanding action to stop the fires. Eventually, foreign leaders began to speak out on social media as well and develop a plan to help put out the fires.

President Jair Bolsonaro in his election campaigned openly stated that the amazon rain forest should be converted to the profit generating commodity. Lots of multinational companies have been trying to grab the lands in the amazon during past three decades.

Effects of damage to the Amazon go far beyond Brazil and its neighbours. The area’s rainforest generates more than 20% of the world’s oxygen and is home to 10% of the world’s known biodiversity. The Amazon is referred to as the “lungs of the planet” and plays a major role in regulating the climate. The world would drastically change if the rainforest were to disappear, with impacts on everything from farms to drinking water.

The lethargic approach of Brazil President to take prompt actions shows that his government has a hidden agenda on this issue.US democrats blame as U.S. farmers can’t sell soybeans to China has created an opportunity for Brazil to sell soybeans to China. As a result, farmers are tearing down the Amazon to grow soybeans. Likewise various reasons are behind this fire of Amazon.

However the leftist and progressive movements of the world raised their voice against the Brazil administration and neo liberal agenda which convert forests and nature to a commodity.
