Multinationals destroy the forests


The Director General of the Department of Forest Conservation revealed the fact  that Dole Lanka Company had been given 400 Hectares from the Government forest reservation in Kuda Oya, Wellawaya and 200 Hectares from the Demodera forest conservation in Rahathangama Grama Seva Division, in the Buttala Divisional Secretariat. In addition local Nelna Private Company had been given200 Hectares from the Wandama Forest Conservation in the Rahathangama grama Seva Division, for the cultivation of mangoes.

This  company had cleared elephant infested heavy jungle area in Wandama bordering the Lunugamwehera National Park.

The Director General of Forest Conservation S.A. Hathurusinghe alleges that Dole Lanka (Pvt) Ltd and Nelna Private Company together had unlawfully acquired 800 Hectares of Forest Land in the Moneragala District belonging to the Department of Forest Conservation.

The farmers and the villagers of Monaragala and Hambantota districts are repeatedly victimized due to attacks of wild elephants as a result of this illegal trespassing and deforestation. On the other hand fauna and flora system has been seriously affected these misconducts of the government.
